St. Vincent Cemetery Needs Volunteers for Planting
You might recall St. Vincent Cemetery in Clifton Park in Baltimore City, the final resting place of 4,185 people. The 5.3 acre Cemetery was bulldozed to remove grave identity, abandoned in 1982, and overgrown with invasive trees and invasive weeds. Rogue trash haulers dumped whole rooms of furniture from nearby abandoned houses. There are only 144 existing gravestones, and none are on the gravesites.
Senior members of CPMBS provided loads of support (emotional, muscle and $) in helping the Friends of St. Vincent Cemetery (FoSVC) organize as a grass roots effort in 2011. A lot has happened since then. FoSVC was able, with help from grants and volunteers, to clear all 5.3 acres at St. Vincent Cemetery. Construction on a Memorial Grove was completed in mid-March 2025 at St. Vincent Cemetery. The purpose of the Memorial Grove is to preserve the existing gravestones located in 4 separate clusters at St. Vincent Cemetery.
A landscape plan will be implemented on Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Volunteers are needed to plant the following items: 6 Emerald Green Arborvitae, 6 Leucothoe (shrubs), 100 purple cone flower (plugs), 100 bee balm (plugs), 150 golden groundsel (plugs). Could you help FoSVC recruit some volunteers to help plant the above-mentioned items for the new Memorial Grove? Any help will be deeply appreciated. Come out to St. Vincent Cemetery and see what has been accomplished.
Sincerely, Stephanie Town
